Last Sunday, March 12, Jim Morehead passed away in his sleep after suffering a stroke. He was awarded two Distinguished Service Crosses in 1942 flying P40s against the Japanese
He was a multiple Ace and had victories in the Pacific and later Europe, leading raids on the murderous Ploesti Oil Fields with the 1st FG. At the end of this clip he is standing on the left with Lt Bill Morris a highly decorated US Navy TBM pilot, at Sonoma County Airport with a perfectly restored P-40 in 2010 owned by Charles Schultz's (of Peanuts fame) son .

Elisabeth Withers - Wind Beneath My Wings. Bomber crews loved these guys. One of the most fearsome collection of fighter pilots to escort and protect Allied bombers during the last part of the war. The Luftwaffe was never happy to see the Red Tails. A remembrance for me to remember my friend, brilliant thinker, and Tuskegee Airman, Adolf Moret who passed from this world into God's hands in 2006...

this would be slick ww2 was infamous for dog fighting and strafing runs and saturation bombing.

Still makes me cry
Great war film but the actual operation was doomed to failure. This was the very last time that airborne troops were parachuted into a 'hot' war zone. In all the years since WW2 the dismal failure of airborne troops to land accurately where they're meant to go has never been repeated.
It would have sounded better without the music. (like in Catch-22)
That's a beautiful video. I can bring you up to date. I built a model of Ernie's B-26 for him, and he invited me to one of the lunches. I continued to make models for the pilots, coming to the lunches when I had a model to present to one of the pilots. Bill Fulwider took over for Ernie when Ernie grew too frail to attend. Then Bill asked me to run the lunches, when he grew to frail (he had brain cancer, I think). I've been running lunches for the group since then... I think late 2013. Unfortunately, every pilot shown in the video has gone to their reward. A few more showed up, but almost all have also passed on. To my knowledge, there are one WWII B-29 pilot, one B-17 navigator, and one B-17 radio operator remaining with us in Sonoma County. Some of these pilots, before they passed on, were interviewed as part of the Library of Congress Oral Hist

The P-40 was an excellent aircraft. It just wasn't as good in a dogfight as the highly maneuverable Zero. The Navy Hellcat was extremely superior to the Zero, and so was the P-51 Mustang.
I have the planes hat!! "D - Day Doll", Normandy, 1944. Based in Riverside, CA and made the El Monte air/car show in 2019. Dogtags, too. (their Fund Raiser).

This is what fantastic movie-making is all about. Not the crap CGI we get nowadays.
Let's be honest now--there is no way there are enough period aircraft to do these missions (nor insurance premiums to make up for any 'accidents') so we're left with CGI to keep things safer. In spite of their best efforts, the film producers were only able to come up with 11 C47s/Dakotas--but DAMN, that actual parachute drop looked incredible.

Great footage, filmed in 'real life' by my father David Waterman - who was an ex para himslef serving in Suez and Cyprus in the 50's. Alas he past away yesterday. Good to see his work is imortilised for all to see. RIP dad.

It’s a shame that something as non noteworthy as a punt returner getting injured would cost this team a trip to the Super Bowl the following week.
Maybe it was due to not having a winning season for nearly a decade at that point but winning that game when all hope was lost is still my favorite Niners memory in the past 20 years.
